I don't farm and I'm always broke b/c I spend every penny on skills. :/
That's why Factions/Nightfall skill system of no free skills killed me.

Everyone has a different "comfort" level with their bank. Their are people who are satisfied with 30k, people who need to see 150k, people who have to get the million.
There is nothing wrong with offering services, powertrading, farming or just playing the game. The game provides earning methods to suit everyone. But don't sneer at people who use other methods than you. They are still putting effort and time into earning.
I usually have about 150k, plus 4-8k on each of 8 characters. No one has 15k armor or rare weapons. (The only rare I found, I gave to my guildmate - he has a paladin and I don't. Over time I'm sure he's given me the equivalent in greens.) Am I rich? No. But I feel comfortable.

I made my last million+ on ecto alone. Before nightfalls came out ecto was down to 4k. I found some for 3.5k too. I bought tons. I took all my items and liquidated to funds to buy ecto. I sold them all back at 9k each. I knew the price of ecto would skyrocket because the same thing happened with factions.
With factions we got to see the armor materials during the preview event. I made 10k vials of ink for 130g each. Sold them all back for 280g each.
I've also been buying claws and fangs since the early days of GW. I had about 2k of each. I bought them all for 100g each. Sold the claws for 1k+ each and the fangs for about 800g each. Wish I had stocked up on more of them.
HoH has always been the best way to get money because its the highest chance of getting a crystaline. My short career in HoH (2 days) we held for 5 hours each day. We didn't stop till everyone's inventory was full. I liked making 10k+ in 4 minutes.

I'm pretty much broke right now, but I'd say over my 16-17 months of playing I've made probably 1.5-2 mil. I just spend a ton on skills, items, armor, etc. I figure its what the money is for why just horde it up?

yet another how much plat do you have post?
i've been playing since last may and now with 10 characters, i have a total of 1000 plat in storage, 100 plat on each character. I used to have 250 sapphires/250 rubies, but sold a bunch of them. Also had a bunch of ecto from just drops when going to uw, and some traded for gems because i couldn't hold any more plat at the time. Then a bunch of greens that might be worth something, but I have no idea. Bunch of rare mats like steel, vellum, monstrous parts. I traded all my ecto for gems to help someone else out ( i assumed they were getting armor). I'll have to rebuy the ecto to get fow maybe for my paragon.
But yeah, I don't have much of a use for gold in the game. I don't usually buy much (except i do collect rare minipets). If i want something, I just go try to farm it, but not extensively. Never did get a rago's staff =) Oh, but I did buy myself a crystalline sword a whlie back.
I have 1 set of fow armor, normal ecto drops + a bit of farming while trying to figure out the uw monk build w/ a friend after we met one of the first. I stopped playing tombs uw after the take over by b/p groups, quit sorrow's after it got boring farming only 5 man groups. Never was interested in uw farming except to get the last 20 ecto for my fow, quit after prot bond. Don't even bother w/ greens anymore these days. Farming is repetitious and boring, and I like challenge and change.
Have a couple sets of 15k for some characters, 1.5k for others. I'm pretty choosy about armor, so I don't get that many sets or upgrade that often. My ranger is still wearing druid's 15k. My necro just got vabbi recently.
So yeah, if you have nothing to spend gold on, it just sort of multiplies and grows on it's own. I use 80% collectors items w/ mods I've found (+1 death 20%, +hp, +ac, etc). Other 20% are greens I've picked up. Never did power trading, used to sell some mods, but just merch them now, even perfect ones.
Probably if I cashed out now I'd have a little over 5000K
Oh and I saved all my dye drops (even blacks which I've use before, but never liked). So I've never bought dye.
But what would i even spend that plat on? there's seriously nothing I want. I'm more interested in exploring the game, finishing quests, getting thru DOA than in buying items. I farm holiday items, but keep them for myself to play w/, get my drunk title, turn into candy corn lol
hmm.. how did i get this gold? I think by not spending myself penniless ever since the beginning. I could never really afford sup vigors, so I never bothered. Just learned to play w/ major and minor vigors. Can't afford skills? choose them carefully and only buy what you need. Want that shiny new armor? Figure out how to farm the materials you need and craft the rare stuff. Got a shiny new green drop? Do you really need it? sell it to someone else for gold.
Also I loved collecting rubies and sapphires pre factions, since they were so rare. I bought them up at 3K, I bought them up at 15K. It didn't really matter to me, I just wanted a stack of 250 heh. I figured they should be worth more than ecto at the time anyway, since their inherent merchant value was the same as ecto (100g), but dropped far, far less frequently. Same w/ diamonds. How many of you have actually seen a diamond drop? I know I haven't.
But I collect them for the hell of it, because they're rare, because they're cool, and because I have nothing else to do w/ my gold. Maybe one day they'll be worth a lot, maybe one day they'll be worthless, at least I can empty my storage a bit so I can breath.
Oh yeah, used to go to fow/uw a lot. You know all the dust and wood everything salvages into? Save it all and convert to vellum. Then sell it for plat. Same w/ stuff that salvages to steel. A lot of stuff expert salvages to steel.
these days I just buy up all skills for all classes for my characters (although some have more skill pts than I can use up lol), even though most of the time that's pretty useless. But the gold has to be used up somehow I guess. I donate to my guild storage as well.
/age i think is about 2000 hours

Just for statistic.
I have 10 characters + 2 mules (with some stuff) and ~0 gold for account - everything was been spent for a new skills for every class, LOL.
Farming brings ~1.5-2K/10 min, but it is boring. I do it only if I really need gold to buy next signet or test the new build.
Guys, we do not need 13208423498 gold to play GW. It is only required for new weapon skins and rare armor.

I have roughly 1.5 mil worth of monstrous eyes and only 300K cash :/
If monstrous eyes prices ever rises I'd be rich, but that is one hell of a gamble.

Currently I know 3 ways to make money.
1. Grinding/Farming whatever you like to call that boring act, that I do only when I must or am bored.
2. Getting lucky with drops, which is how I made any of the money I have, I'm extremely lucky.
3. Powertrading, hard to do now if you're just getting into it, but can still be done. It was more profitable in the past I think.
Nothing is 100% because farming is boring to me, you won't always get lucky and blech powertrading.

Define Rich or Poor in Guild Wars?
Is it how much cash you have, or how many materials you have, or is it all of your characters decked out in Fissure Armour?
I have very little cash right now since Nightfall, as my heroes dwindled my account down (a bit like children really), but i do have around (estimated) 1.5 million in materials, dyes etc, if I decided to sell, that is. I tend to hoard, dont know why.
I only have 2 characters to feed and maintain and they have good armours and weapons, which I never buy (My Philosophy: If I havent killed the Boss for it, I dont want it).
I rarely spend my money. I rarely farm par se. I never trade, just sell to NPC Merchants. My only GW vice is cap sigs, skills and the occasional key. I do go into the Fissure of Woe on a regular basis and quest, but this is for the skill points mainly to feed my hunger for more skill unlocking.
I have in the past, had 1,000,000 sitting in my account. It's no big deal! What is the point of it sitting there? There is no title saying ''Tyrian Millionaire''. There is no ''GW Forbes List of the top 100 rich characters''. So who is going to know? and who really cares anyway?
In my opinion, farming for farming sake, just to have 1,000,000 in your account is pointless and boring.
It just makes me laugh when I see people selling ''Uber Items'' for grossly inflated prices. Who cares if your Gold Longbow of Uber Might cost 100+ ectos? My Drago's Flatbow which incidently I went out and killed him for it, is still just as good and it was for FREE and FUN to get.
As for this 'Have's and Have-nots', who is going to know wether you are rich or poor .............. unless you tell them.

At the moment I might have about 5-10k on my account. This is, however, because I really am a spender; whenever I get some money in my hands I look for a use for it, be it capture signets, a new piece of armor, some weapon I'd like to invest in, etc. I also give money to friends in-game who are experiencing hard times financially.
I think the most money I've ever been in possession of at any one time - just straight gold, not counting items I've also had - was about 180-200k or so. That money came from lucky drops, really. I've gone months without having so much as a dime to my name only to get a key drop in, say, FoW, and find a very nice item in a nearby chest, such as a "perfect" low requirement Chaos Axe or, more recently, a very nice, low requirement Gloom shield.
I took a few simple business courses in high-school, so I know how to make the most of the little money I have. I'm very good at buying extremely low and doubling, tripling, quadrupling, etc. my profit. This is how I make my money. I don't sit around looking for things to buy, but when I'm in an outpost where sales or purchases are being made I do keep one eye on the trade chat and another on whatever else I ahppen to be doing.
I farmed a LOT for a while there, mostly Ettins before the drops seem to peeter out - you can still have profitable ettin runs by the way, I very recently found a superior vigor, which I opted to use rather than sell but could have gotten a good deal of gold for otherwise. But these days I just can't devote hours and hours to trying to make a bit of gold. Once in a while I'll run out and do a few runs in various favorite spots of mine and come back with about 10k or so in gold for something like 20-30 minutes of work, but it's just not that much fun to do the same thing over and over and over again, no matter what the payout.
I recently made a Ritualist that I am bound and determined to play all the way through Factions with only the gold that I find, and so far it's worked out well. You don't always need max armor to get everything done; I still have to craft two pieces of my max Imperial Armor, but what I have left that is not max is rated at 30, and I'm doing just fine and dandy. Being poor is not a bad thing, and it hasn't ever stopped me from playing the game to it's fullest.
I won't deny that I'd like a nice HoH drop, though, which I why I do Heroes Ascent often now :P
As it is, the only farming I do now is UW trapping with my ranger. I usually have fun chats with the people I'm trapping with, and it goes quickly - the payout is also very nice, as I average about 2-4 ecto every 4 or 5 runs, give or take, which evens out to about 6 ecto a night, which I can then sell or, as I am now, save for those "just in case" spontaneous spending sprees.

Unless there's a design I especially like, greens or crafters. Hell, with the arrival of inscriptions, I use lots of purples too.
Edit: that being said, out of my ten (PvE) characters, my ranger's got fissure. But even then, that was a 'Beaten cantha, what to do now? Eh, why not trade and farm for fissure?' thing

Actual ArenaNet Stats
Here is a quote a Mike O'Brian, Head of the Design Team.... Sorry about the copy and paste I couldn't figure out how to quote from one thread to another but I promise the original post is somewhere in the forums
"At ArenaNet we play the game just like you do, so we know that for most of you, gold is a precious commodity that you work hard to attain. In fact, our statistics show that 50% of all active accounts have fewer than 10 platinum pieces, and 75% of all active accounts have fewer than 20 platinum pieces."
and there you have it which means that the vast majority of the people posting on the forums about how "poor" they are compared to others are actually the minority and are in reality the rich.
